`With graduation, it is time to put down plans about where you want to go'

Coimbatore: Graduates should be ready to gain knowledge in the field in which they were working and review their strategies regularly, R. Rajalakshmi, Director, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Chennai, said here recently.

She was speaking at the fourth convocation function of Karpagam Arts and Science College and the second convocation function of Karpagam College of Engineering, on the arts college campus.

"With graduation, it is time to put down plans about where you want to go," she said, pointing out that even if they were unsure about what they wanted to do in the future, students would find that their education would help them make appropriate choices. It was also time to chalk out strategies and add value to what they had studied, by concentrating on their aptitudes.

Interaction

They should display professionalism in the place where they chose to work, strive to excel and plan effectively to increase their productivity. In any sector, 70 per cent of the work revolved around interaction with people.

Those who were starting a career ought to concentrate on aptitudes and keep learning all the time.

In his presidential address, G. Kameshwar, Principal Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Chennai, said that career opportunities these days were much more than in the past. People were doing work that was close to their hearts.

"Go where your heart leads you. You may not know what you are going to do, but you will discover in time," he said, underlining the need to be innovative. He mentioned the case of a mechanical engineer from India running a large trading company in Dubai and a civil engineer who ran a multimedia company.

Career achievement

Students should plan for career achievement when still in college. That would give them an aim. What they learnt in college would help them get what they wanted.

Among those who participated were R. Vasanthakumar, Managing Trustee, Karpagam Educational Institutions; K. Murugaiah, Administrative Officer; V. Gunaraj, Principal, Karpagam College of Engineering and G. Sekar, Principal, Karpagam Arts and Science College.
