Mayor seeks report on construction of 11-storey building

Staff Reporter

DIC(K) councillor alleges that it is unauthorised

Kozhikode: Mayor M. Bhaskaran, on Monday, directed Town Planning Officer Raju Mathew to file a report on an allegation that a builder had illegally constructed an 11-storey building on Kottaram Road here.

Raising the issue at the corporation council meeting through a calling-attention motion, U.T. Rajan, councillor from the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran), said the property developer had refused to allot 5.71 cents of land to the civic body as quid pro quo for the construction of the multi-storey apartment. The construction itself was unauthorised, Mr. Rajan alleged.

Mr. Bhaskaran instructed Standing Committee Chairman on Health and Education P.T. Rajan to hold discussions with school authorities to solve the issue of parking school buses in front of educational institutions.

Earlier, M. Thankam, member from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), moved a calling-attention motion stating that there was no zebra crossing on Mankavu Bypass Road where a school was situated. This was causing hardship to schoolchildren, she added.

Taking part in the deliberations, V.V. Sivadas, also of the CPI(M), said the police controlled traffic only in front of unaided English-medium public schools in the city. Another member from the party, M.C. Anil Kumar, said school buses were being parked in front of these institutions to pick up students as soon as classes ended, creating traffic blocks in many parts of the city, especially Chevayur and Chervarmambalam. Most of the Government schools did not have zebra crossings in front of them, he said.

Through another calling-attention motion, P.K. Mamu Koya, of the Congress, requested the council for setting up a sewage treatment plant in the city. Mr. Bhaskaran said the corporation had already prepared a project for setting up the plant.
