CHENNAI: A cheque drop box to benefit landline and post-paid mobile subscribers of BSNL Chennai Telephones in western suburbs such as Pattabiram and Thiruninravur has been set up at the Avadi exchange. The facility would help them avoid the present practice of going to Anna Nagar to pay the bills by cheques or demand drafts. The General Manager (North) of Chennai Telephones, V. Kuppuswamy, who installed the cheque drop box, told The Hindu that plans were on the anvil to upgrade the Avadi centre to offer comprehensive services to mobile phone subscribers. A range of services, on the lines of those offered at the centres in Ambattur and Anna Nagar, would be made available in two months. Chennai Telephones would also be opening a customer service centre in Poonamallee this month-end, he said. Landline subscriber base of BSNL in Avadi and surrounding areas was around 24,000 and nearly 9,000 in Poonamallee. The number of post-paid mobile subscribers in these localities is expected to be in thousands. Welcoming the facility, chief coordinator of Tiruvallur District Consumer Information Centre, T. Sadagopan said it was a long standing demand as it was difficult, particularly for the senior citizens, to go to Anna Nagar.
