dated March 29, 1956: Sethusamudram project

The Sethusamudram Committee appointed by the Government of India with Dr. A. Ramaswami Mudaliar as Chairman has finalised its report, which is likely to be signed by the members on April 2 or 3 and sent up to the Government. The Committee met on March 27 at the Secretariat in Madras. This Rs. 10-crore scheme seeks to connect the Gulf of Mannar with the Palk Bay and thus provide a safe navigation route from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. It also includes provision for improving the Tuticorin port.
