ERODE: The long-awaited construction work of the electric crematorium here resumed.
All support
Talking to The Hindu , coordinator of the work and Managing Director of Lotus Hospitals, Erode, E.K. Sahadevan, said that the work began in the Erode Municipal burning ghat a few months back, but stopped due to rain and the floods that followed. The Municipal administration rendered all support to establish the crematorium.
Slow progress
The total cost of construction was around Rs. 1.25 crores. The work commenced with a donation of Rs. 30 lakhs, including the MLA Constituency Development Fund of Rs. 10 lakhs sanctioned by Erode MLA, K.S. Thennarasu, said Mr. Sahadevan. The Rotary Club of Erode Central proposed to conduct a fund raising programme in Erode. Two cremation tables would be erected - one that would work in electricity and the other in gas. The progress of the work could be slow due to the approaching Assembly elections, he said.
Nominal charges
The crematorium would be ready by December, and it was proposed to introduce a pyramid-shaped building for the crematorium. A small lawn would be ready in front of the crematorium. Nominal charges would be collected for the cremation, and a committee would be formed to maintain the crematorium, Mr. Sahadevan said.
