DHAKA: In what is seen as an unprecedented move in the country's judicial history, the Bangladesh Supreme Court has issued a suo motu show cause notice to the Chief Election Commissioner M.A. Aziz, an incumbent Supreme Court judge, to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be pursued against him for expressing alleged "no-confidence" in the court. The contempt issue stemmed from an application filed by the CEC seeking remedy for an alleged controversial remark about the CEC. Alauddin Ahmed, an Opposition lawmaker, reportedly made the comment in a private channel talk show. During the hearing, the Supreme Court said the CEC's interlocutory application appeared to demonstrate his "no-confidence" in the court as it sought remedy on the issue in a full court of the appellate division instead of a bench constituted earlier for hearing his leave-to-appeal petition.
