Architect of modern Haryana passes away

Chandigarh: Bansi Lal, senior Congress leader and former Haryana Chief Minister, died in New Delhi on Tuesday night, family sources said here. He was ailing for some time.

Considered the architect of modern Haryana, Mr. Bansi Lal was the Chief Minister for four terms, first in 1968 and the last from 1996 to 1999. He was a controversial figure during the Emergency for his proximity to Sanjay Gandhi. He was the Defence Minister then. He later parted ways with Congress and set up the Haryana Vikas Party before returning to the parent party ahead of last year's Assembly poll. — PTI
