Big jump in Belgaum plan outlay

It is pegged at Rs. 1,510 crore; lion's share for agriculture sector


  • Rs. 22 crore allocated for dairying and Rs. 22 crore for horticulture
  • Allocation for farm mechanisation up by 51 per cent
  • Small-scale sector gets Rs. 16 crore

    Belgaum: The annual district credit plan envisaging Rs. 1,510 crore for 2006-07 launched by the Syndicate Bank on Monday marks an increase of 14 per cent over 2005-06.

    According to a release here on Tuesday, the credit plan prepared by the lead bank envisages Rs. 1,280 crore for priority sector and Rs. 230 crore for non-priority sector.

    Continuing to accord priority for agriculture sector, Rs. 606 crore have been allocated for crop production programmes.

    The allocation marks an increase of 7 per cent over the previous year.

    As milk products from Belgaum are in great demand in Goa and Maharashtra, the plan has ensured sufficient provision of Rs. 22 crore to boost dairying.

    With horticulture being another sector with substantial growth potential in Athani, Raibag, and Chikkodi taluks of the district, the plan provides Rs. 22 crore to the sector.

    The allocation covers floriculture sector as well.

    To boost farm mechanisation, Rs. 79 crore has been allocated, an increase of 51 per cent over the previous year's allocation.

    That apart Rs. 78 crore have been allocated to encourage minor irrigation, including laying of pipeline and installation of drip irrigation systems. Small-scale industries (SSI) sector gets Rs. 16 crore.

    There are about 25,000 SSI units in the district.

    The other priority sector that have substantial allocation include transport, retail trade, small business, and housing sector.
