Orphans to be shifted to foundling homes

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Children below six years of age who are offered shelter in orphanages will now be shifted to foundling homes run by Nirmala Shishu Bhavan and Kerala Child Welfare Committee. A communication in this regard will also be sent to the Juvenile Justice Board Chairman.

The decision was taken here on Monday at a meeting of representatives from various orphanages and charitable homes in the district convened by Chief Judicial Magistrate S. Soman, who is also the Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Board.

The meeting discussed at length on how to implement the Juvenile Justice Act 2000 effectively in the State.

Some of the other decisions taken at the meeting include furnishing information on the strength and status of children residing in orphanages to the Chief Judicial Magistrate and sending semi-orphan children for foster care. The heads of orphanages have also been directed to take the initiative in rehabilitating children above six years of age.

The meeting was also attended by poet Sugathakumari; joint director, Social Welfare Department, K.K. Mani, and prosecution deputy director G. Sreekumar.
