Corrections and Clarifications

  • How can Iran say it is not hiding any [nuclear] bomb in any part of Iraq, asks a reader ("We are not hiding any bomb: Iran", March 28, 2006). Iranian Vice-President Isfandiar Rahim Mashaee was talking in Delhi about there not being any bomb in Iran, which we got wrong.

  • "Biswas led a simple life: CPI(M)", said the heading (March 27, 2006). The text that appeared had no reference to the CPI(M) or what it said. What got edited out read: "The CPI(M) Polit Bureau had noted that Anil Biswas, West Bengal State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), led a simple life and his whole time and energies were devoted to party work."

  • HRH, The Duchess of Cornwall was incorrectly referred to as Camilla Parker Bowles, in the caption for the standalone picture "Prince in Punjab" (March 28, 2006, page 1). Her title has been clarified by the British Deputy High Commission.

  • "Muraleedharan not to contest" (Kerala, March 25, 2006) is fine, says a reader, but why does the sub-heading say it is "in protest against electoral tie-up struck with the Congress"? Is he opting out in protest against the tie-up signed by himself? He was in fact doing so in view of the widespread protest in the party, as the text said.

  • In "Torture of Dalit girl comes to light" (Andhra Pradesh, March 23, 2006), a reader has objected to the sentence "When she feigned ignorance ... ", which means an assumption of guilt. In this case, "pleaded" would have been appropriate.

  • In MetroPlus (Chennai, March 25, 2006, page 3), the picture that accompanied the article "The colour of desire?" is not that of model Naomi Campbell (as the caption said), but of her mother Valerie Campbell.
