Subrata Mukherjee defeated

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The high-profile Congress candidate and former Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Subrata Mukherjee, was defeated in the biennial elections to five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal on Tuesday.

Those who emerged victorious were four candidates of the Left Front and a lone nominee of the Trinamool Congress, the largest Opposition party in the Assembly.

While the four Left Front candidates were assured of victory, the contest for the fifth seat was between Mukul Roy of the Trinamool and Mr. Mukherjee, a former Trinamool leader who joined the Congress last year.

Those to be elected were Moinul Hassan, Tapan Sen and Saman Pathak of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), BarunMukherjee of the All India Forward Bloc (all Left Front candidates) and Mr. Roy.

In all 285 MLAs cast their votes with two belonging to the Socialist Unity Centre of India and one from the Congress abstaining. There are 294 seats in the Assembly, six of which are vacant.
