NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran has left for Washington to hold talks with U.S. Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns on the civilian nuclear deal and other issues. The External Affairs Ministry spokesman told presspersons on Tuesday that Mr. Saran was "on his way" to Washington. Mr. Saran, he said, would be talking to Mr. Burns on the steps to take the ties forward.
Face-to-face contact
It will be the first face-to-face contact between the two sides after the visit of U.S. President George Bush to India in the first week of March. Mr. Saran is also expected to address the conservative Heritage Foundation. In recent remarks, Mr. Burns has said Washington had presented a draft of a comprehensive civilian nuclear agreement. The Indian plan to separate its civilian and military facilities will, of course, be part of the final agreement. Presumably, Mr. Saran and Mr. Burns will hold further discussions on the draft agreement even as the Americans try to push the deal through Congress.
