COIMBATORE: After a fall in prices during the last one month, poultry units here are cutting production. Broiler bird price here has slumped and is ruling less than the production cost (Rs. 28 a kg) for the last 35 days. The farm-gate price here was as low as Rs. 12 a kg at Palladam on Sunday. The General Manager of Venkateshwara Hatcheries Private Limited, M.R.I. Magdum, said that the company has requested some of the financially healthy integrators to support the smaller ones. "We are trying to curtail production by 20 per cent." Venkateshwara Hatcheries has over 60 per cent share in the combined market of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He said that two main steps taken to reduce production were: destruction of 14-day old broiler eggs and release of parent birds (by the integrators) in to the market at 60 weeks instead of 68 weeks. The Managing Director of Suguna Poultry Farms here, B. Soundararajan, said that his company does not plan to bring down production now. With feed adjustments growth of the bird's weight could be slowed down. Suguna had about 40 per cent market share in Tamil Nadu.
