Post-Godhra case: nine sentenced

AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced nine persons to various terms of imprisonment in a post-Godhra riot case.

One person was killed and another injured in a firing during a group clash on April 12, 2002 in Dani Limda locality, Old Ahmedabad.

Sessions judge Sonia Gokani, who is also the special POTA court judge trying the Godhra train carnage, sentenced prime accused Mustaq Ahmedabad Sheikh alias Mustaq Kanio to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000, and in lieu additional six months imprisonment.

Mustaq opened fire, killing Piyush Mehta on the spot and injuring Rajinder Damor.

Eight others were sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 each, while 25 were acquitted.

Thirty-two persons were arrested immediately after the clash and Mustaq was apprehended on December 18, 2002.

The police also recovered two country-made pistols from the spot.

Various charges

The accused were convicted on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly and possessing sharp weapons on the basis of eyewitness accounts and the documents recovered.

The court examined 22 witnesses, including the injured and his two relatives.

The father of the deceased had turned hostile.
