KOZHIKODE: Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the `People's Collective' organised by Campus Pulse, a progressive arts and cultural collective at the Medical College, demanding upgrading of the Kozhikode Medical College (KMC) to the status of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

The Kozhikode medical college caters to 5 lakh people from the six districts of Malabar — Kozhikode, Malapuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod. On an average, five lakh people come for consultation to the outpatient (OP) wing every year and 1.6 lakh people come for consultation to the inpatient (IP) wing every year.

More than 25,000 deliveries take place at the hospital annually. T.P.M. Zahir, MLA; A. Pradeepkumar, DYFI State secretary; K.P. Kunhahammedkutty, Kozhikode district panchayat president; V. Geetha, Principal of the medical college; and P.V. Narayanan, Vice-Principal, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
