VOICING THE DEMAND: Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurating the meeting held to demand the upgrading of Kozhikode Medical College to the status of AIIMS in the city on Tuesday.
KOZHIKODE: Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the `People's Collective' organised by Campus Pulse, a progressive arts and cultural collective at the Medical College, demanding upgrading of the Kozhikode Medical College (KMC) to the status of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS). The meeting observed that the college, which has a campus of 250 acres of land, should be upgraded as it had the requisite facilities. The medical college also has immense opportunities for clinical research as a large number of patients visit the hospital.There are no modern medical facilities in Malabar region apart from the medical college hospital. Major institutes including Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology and Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) have been confined to Thiruvananthapuram. The Kozhikode medical college caters to 5 lakh people from the six districts of Malabar Kozhikode, Malapuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod. On an average, five lakh people come for consultation to the outpatient (OP) wing every year and 1.6 lakh people come for consultation to the inpatient (IP) wing every year. More than 25,000 deliveries take place at the hospital annually. T.P.M. Zahir, MLA; A. Pradeepkumar, DYFI State secretary; K.P. Kunhahammedkutty, Kozhikode district panchayat president; V. Geetha, Principal of the medical college; and P.V. Narayanan, Vice-Principal, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
