DEHRA DUN: Satyavrat Chaturvedi, the Congress nominee, was declared elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttaranchal after polling in the Vidhan Sabha here on Tuesday. Mr. Chaturvedi bagged 39 votes while R. K. Verman of the Bahujan Samaj Party bagged 11 votes, including four of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which has 19 MLAs, abstained. Talking to newspersons later, a beaming Mr. Chaturvedi said he would effectively raise the issues concerning the hill State in the Rajya Sabha as he was emotionally attached to the "Devbhumi," the land of gods. A former MP from Chhattarpur in Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Chaturvedi was given the ticket despite a hue and cry by Congressmen that only a local person should be made the candidate.
