Transco may go in for power cut in East Goavari district

Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: The AP Transco has not ruled out power cut (load relief) in urban areas of East Godavari district if the hydal power situation becomes grim. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Superintendent Engineer of AP Transco K.V. Subbarao said that the district was overdrawing energy from the grid.

At present the consumption in the district is 6.2 million units per day against the maximum quota of 5.8 million units per day. "We are forced to draw extra. If the consumption goes up in next two months of summer and hydal power supply comes down, then we may go for load relief in urban areas too," said Mr. Rao.

Free power

He said that the indiscipline due to free power was also one of the reasons for overdrawl and the other main reason was non-usage of capacitors by 80 per cent of the farmers in the district. He said that out of 28,576 agriculture connections in East Godavari, 23,276 connections were being covered under free power scheme.

According to S.E. the continuous persuasion by their field staff has resulted in fixing of capacitors by 9500 farmers in the district and another 13,000 farmers are yet to fix capacitors. He said that Jaggampeta, Rajanagaram, Ambajipeta, Inavelli and Rangampeta were some of the areas where the farmers had not come forward to fix capacitors.

Mr. Subba Rao said that they were going to conduct `Rythu Chaitanya Yatras' (campaign to enlighten farmers) from April 2 to 28 and the same would be held at mandal level in first week of May. Replying to a question, the S.E. said that the Transco would arrange capacitors through distributors, if they come voluntarily in large numbers.
