Priority for development of the town

MAHABUBNAGAR : The Mahabubnagar municipal council gave its approval to the budget for 2006-07 when it was presented at a specially-convened meeting here on Tuesday.

Presenting the budget with a surplus of Rs.72.6 lakhs, Municipal Chairperson Ubedulla Kotwal said that austerity measures would be initiated to cut expenditure and priority would be given to development of the town. He said that income to municipality from different sources besides grants and loans was estimated at Rs. 5455.55 lakhs while the expenditure is estimated at Rs. 5,382.92 lakhs.

The Chairperson said Rs.180 lakhs would be spent on laying of roads besides Rs.40 lakhs on maintenance of the existing roads. Rs.50 lakhs would be spent on repairs for drainage. The Chairperson said that 12 wards were selected to create basic amenities under Indiramma model wards schemes.

Mixed reaction

While Congress councillor Amar lauded the efforts of the Chairperson for presenting `such a progressive budget,' another councillor termed it disappointing. While Telugu Desam floor leader Krishna Mohan described it a `good budget', another TDP councillor Goverdhan Yadav termed it a `sugar-coated bitter pill.'
