Canal in the pipeline

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced on Tuesday that a canal with a capacity of 683 cusecs would be constructed from Hathni Kund Barrage to Naraingarh benefiting villages falling in the Shivalik area.

Addressing a rally in the local Anaj Mandi at Naraingarh, Mr. Hooda said that the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had joined politics only for serving the masses. She belonged to noble family which in the past had made sacrifices for the sake of the people. Citicising his predecessor, Om Parkash Chautala, Mr. Hooda said that he had promised free power and water supply but the people had to bear bullets in his tenure. Commenting that in a democratic set up bullets were not the way to solve a problem, he said that he had taken the historic decision of waiving off power bill arrears of Rs. 1,600 crores.

Presiding over the rally, the Union Minister, Selja, said that the Centre was formulating schemes for the welfare of the common man. She appealed to the people to help in curbing the menace of female foeticide.

Gym inaugurated

Haryana Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dharambir on Tuesday inaugurated a swimming pool and a gymnasium in the Sector 29 Kendriya Vidyalaya here.

Observing that the progress and prosperity of a nation are measured by the health of its people, he said the Haryana Government had chalked out a programme to construct 500 stadiums in the rural areas of the State. Mr. Dharambir said special efforts should be made by all sections of society to make the youth healthy. "Instead of wasting money on providing health facilities, children should be motivated to join sport activities for keeping them fit."
