`Motivate public to donate eyes'

Sankara Eye Centre gets ISO 9001:2000 accreditation

COIMBATORE: Promoting public awareness on eye donation is the need of the hour, said D. R. Karthikeyan, former Director, Central Bureau of Investigation, here recently.

Distributing spectacles to children at the Sankara Eye Centre, he said that every fourth visually challenged person in the world was an Indian.

India required one million eyes per annum, as 90 lakh people in the country suffered from bilateral blindness. "We need more eye banks and the public should be motivated to donate their eyes," he said.

Sankara Eye Centre is one among the five institutions selected by the office of the President of India for the project for providing spectacles to poor children. In this regard, the hospital received a grant of Rs. 2 lakhs, which would benefit 2,000 children.

The hospital would also focus on children in orphanages in and around Coimbatore.

The Chairman of the hospital, S.V Balasubramaniam, received the ISO 9001:2000 accreditation from Mr. Karthikeyan.
