Bangalore: Maharani's College for Women will be known as Maharani's College of Arts, Commerce and Management from the coming academic year. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced this on Tuesday while launching the activities of the students' association of the college.
Recruitment of teachers
He also referred to the serious shortage of lecturers in government colleges and promised that this will be rectified soon. "The Finance Department may have frozen new recruitments, but in regard to government colleges and schools, teacher posts cannot be allowed to remain vacant for years. Appointments will have to be made," he said. "There are tragic incidents of students taking their lives because they fared badly in examinations. This should not happen... you should face life's adversities with courage and confidence and keep trying. I too was considered an `average student.' If that it how your teachers and parents consider you, don't give up hope. If you persevere you can succeed, not just in college but also in the life ahead of you," Mr. Kumaraswamy told the students. The Chief minister said funds will be made available for improving the college's infrastructure. A new library and other facilities will be provided, he said and requested Principal Secretary for Higher Education Shobha Nambisan to take this up and also the renaming of the college. Before the function the Chief Minister was surrounded by a group of students and a few teachers, protesting against the lack of maintenance on the campus. They referred to the tragic death of an 18-year-old student who was crushed by a falling tree branch a fortnight ago and asked for better security for their lives.
Survey of trees
Mr. Kumaraswamy assured them this will be done. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the Horticulture Department will survey old trees on college campuses and in compounds of other public buildings, he said. Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy and Minister for Small-scale Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu addressed the students.
