BANGALORE: The city police have solved 38 cases of theft and arrested 25 persons, including a gang involved in stealing sandalwood, in the last fortnight. Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh told presspersons on Tuesday that the police recovered Rs. 12 lakh worth sandalwood billets stolen from the Cubbon Park, High Grounds, Basavanagudi, Fraser Town and J.B. Nagar police station limits. With this, 19 cases of sandalwood theft have been solved, he said. On the attempted theft of sandalwood from the residence of Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph, Mr. Singh said the investigation by a special police team is progressing in the right direction.
Hit-and-run cases
On the investigation of the case in which Traffic Sub-Inspector Arun Kumar was killed, Mr. Singh said the police have obtained clues about the suspect involved in knocking the sub-inspector down. The driver of the sports utility vehicle was giving misleading statements. However, the accused in the case will be apprehended shortly, the Commissioner said. Mr. Singh said police checked around 200 sports utility vehicles and questioned 85 owners of such vehicles. They are taking the assistance of the Forensic Science Laboratory, he said. On another hit-and-run case, in which Srinivasa Murthy, a traffic police constable, was killed, Mr. Singh said the police have identified the driver of multiutility vehicle involved in the accident. He is a native of Srinivasapura, near Kolar, he said. Police are searching for the person who employed the driver.
Gesture
Mr. Singh appreciated the gesture by some people who have come forward to help the families of the two police personnel killed in the accidents. While Y.N.M. Murthy has given Rs. 10,000 each to the two families, a private company has given Rs. 50,000, he said.
Complaints
Mr. Singh said the police have received 12 complaints through their website www.bmp.gov.in. Of them, two charged some policemen with indulging in corrupt practices. The Commissioner said will initiate departmental inquiry against the personnel concerned. The remaining complaints, Mr. Singh said, are related to issues such as need for streetlights and providing security.
