BANGALORE: Chairman and Group Managing Director of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal on Tuesday said the opportunities in healthcare, hospitality, tourism and the service industry are huge and untapped. Delivering the convocation address at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, Mr. Mittal said hospitality and tourism will be the next big wave to hit the country. Although India had lost out to China in manufacturing, the country still has its strengths intact in light engineering, automobile and handicrafts. He saw India's biggest strength in the services sector and the huge 600 million rural populace involved in agriculture, a section, he said, has to be brought to the mainstream. Mr. Mittal referred to the new programmes for the farm sector in the Union Budget. "The time for agriculture has come what with the reforms and the participation of corporates," he said. He said that India's 630 million in the working age will go up to 820 million in the next 20 years. Mr. Mittal compared this with the West's ageing societies, now in a "denial mode." "Ten years from now, they will struggle. India's time has come. The knowledge-based economy is attracting attention worldwide." Mr. Mittal recalled Bharti's receipt of the first mobile telephony license in 1995 issued for Delhi and the company's initial takeover of three mobile circles including Karnataka. Over the next 10 years, Bharti's network expanded taking it to 5,200 towns and 150,000 villages across the country, he said. "We set up 10,000 stations in the last 10 years. Another 10,000 will be added by the end of this fiscal." If television is the most democratising tool, Mr. Mittal was sure the mobile phone had now taken its place. "Indian mobile tariffs are the lowest in the world, up to 20 times lower in some cases. Farmers, fishermen, labourers are among the users," he added.
Awarded
During the convocation, the institute awarded the title of Fellow of IIMB to five students, the Post Graduate Diploma in Management to 175 students, the PG Diploma in Software Enterprise Management (PGSEM) to 94 students and the PG Diploma in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM) to 32 participants.
Intake increased
IIMB Director Prakash G. Apte said that the intake for the Post Graduate Programme in Management has been increased to 260 from this year. This will go up to 300 by next year. "To cater to this expansion, a new 160-room hostel block has been constructed," Mr. Apte said. The intake was also increased from 120 to 150 for the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management (PGSEM), by adding a section at Chennai through the distance mode. From the batch of 2006, admissions to the Institute's Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) will be based on GATE, GMAT and GRE scores, besides the Common Admissions Test (CAT). Dr. Apte said IIMB had inked student exchange partnership deals with the Leon Racanati Graduate School of Business Administration, Tel Aviv University, Israel, and Northeastern University, Boston, this year.

Securing the first rank in the Post Graduate Diploma in Management programme, Gaurav Agarwal was awarded the IIMB gold medal.
