Coimbatore: The advance motor vehicle tax collection counters opened by the Transport Department from March 1 to 24, has so far realised tax revenue of Rs. 76 lakhs from 6,737 vehicle owners in Coimbatore Circle comprising Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris districts. The tax collection drive would continue till April 10 at the regular and special counters. Talking to The Hindu , the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, K. Yogarajan, said that the counters were opened on March 1 itself this year as against the normal practice of opening it on March 15. This was done to avoid last minute rush. Special tax collection counters have been functioning on the Stock Exchange premises on Tiruchi Road and at the Civil Supplies office at Kavundampalayam. In addition, there are exclusively designated counters collecting the tax both at the Regional Transport Offices (North and South), said the Regional Transport Officer, Coimbatore North (holding additional charge of South), D. Mani. These counters would be functioning on all working days, including Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Mr. Yogarajan said that during the previous year, a sum of Rs. 3.9 crores was collected from 45,000 vehicle owners and this year the Department was hopeful of collecting Rs. 4.5 crores from 55,000 vehicle owners. In addition to these special and regular counters, the motor vehicle owners could pay up their tax with the treasury, select branches of the Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and the members of the Automobile Association of Southern India (AASI) could remit their tax through their association itself. The vehicle owners should avoid approaching the brokers and touts. With special and regular counters manned by exclusive staff, the Transport Department assuring a hassle free transaction said that the vehicle owners should turn up at these counters with their RC book, insurance cover, previous tax token, and pollution under control certificate.
