Hizbul militant arrested

NEW DELHI : The Special Cell of the Delhi police on Tuesday arrested an alleged terrorist belonging to the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen near Azadpur Sabzi Mandi in North Delhi and claimed to have recovered 2 kg of deadly RDX and detonators from him.

According to the police, a team headed by Inspector Badrish Dutt of the Special Cell arrested Mehruddin alias Javed of Jammu and Kashmir around 7-30 p.m. He is being interrogated by the police.

Mehruddin was arrested following a tip-off that a suspected terrorist was likely to visit the Capital to carry out attacks.

Man commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his house at Bhajanpura in North-East Delhi on Tuesday. He left behind a suicide note in which he purportedly asked forgiveness from his wife for not being able to address his problems.

According to the police, Ram Dayal Goswami, a resident of D-Block in Bhajanpura, was found hanging by his wife, Sadhna, who returned from her parents' house in Kanti Nagar around 5.45 p.m. At the time of the incident, Ram Dayal was alone in the house.

Ram Dayal purportedly wrote in the note that he was mentally disturbed for the past one year and that he had lost confidence in himself. He also praised his wife for supporting him and asked for forgiveness.

Three held

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly stealing vehicles. The police claim to have recovered 13 stolen vehicles at their instance.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Hauz Khas had arrested two persons -- Aslam and Shoaib -- behind Siri Fort auditorium on March 22. At their instance, the police also arrested the alleged receiver of stolen property, Mohammad Saban. The police recovered two stolen motorcycles from the hideout of the accused in North-East Delhi and the rest from the Saban's village in Bijnour district of Uttar Pradesh.

Man stabbed to death

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death by his friend following a row at Paharganj in Central Delhi on Monday.

According to the police, Amit, a resident of Chuna Mandi, was allegedly stabbed by Chintu near his house in the evening. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Amit and Chintu had been friends for long. They did not have any permanent source of income. Amit had apparently lent out some money to Chintu who was not returning it. The police suspect that the row over returning the money was the reason behind the incident.

Sheila returns

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit returned to the Capital on Tuesday after personally assessing the infrastructure at Melbourne where the 18th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held.

Ms. Dikshit, who was accorded a warm welcome at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here, also brought with her the Commonwealth Games flag. The flag was presented to her at the concluding function of the games. A number of State Ministers, MLAs and dignitaries were present at IGI Airport to receive the Chief Minister on Tuesday evening. Delhi will host the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
