Staff Reporter

Stolen property, firearms recovered

NEW DELHI: Six Bangladesh migrants have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police for alleged involvement in several cases of burglary and robbery reported from South Delhi and North-West Delhi in the past couple of months. The police claim to have recovered stolen property worth Rs. 4 lakhs, besides firearms and housebreaking implement, from the accused.

The accused are also being questioned to ascertain if they were involved in the Siddhartha Enclave double murder case in which an elderly Delhi High Court lawyer and her daughter -- also a High Court lawyer -- were found murdered in their house on March 12. A Special Staff team under the supervision of Inspector Rajender Singh had laid a trap near Yamuna Canal in South Delhi this past Monday and arrested the accused following a brief exchange of fire. The police recovered three country-made revolvers, cartridges and five knives from the accused. They have been identified as Mohammad Anwar, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Najrul, Mohammad Afjal, Mohammad Manik and Mohammad Aslam.

At their instance, the police further recovered stolen gold and silver jewellery worth Rs. 4 lakhs, 16 wrist watches, six cameras, two mobile phones, iron saws, mesh cutter and screw drivers. The police said Anwar was the leader of the gang that was involved in 37 cases of burglary and robbery reported South and North-West Delhi. Earlier, the gang was allegedly involved in looting lakhs of rupees from a person in Gandhi Nagar, East Delhi.

According to the police, the gang would stab or fire at inmates if they offered resistance. They used to assemble in a park near the targeted house around 8 p.m. and then wait till well past midnight to commit the burglary
