NEW DELHI: Giving a major impetus to initiative to decongest the Capital's roads, the Public Works Department of the Delhi Government has identified elevated corridor projects to provide signal-free access to various parts of the city. Among the major projects cleared are an 8 km elevated stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to Moolchand, a 12 km East-West corridor taking off from Raj Ghat and touching Punjabi Bagh, and an 11 km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to INA Market. Giving this information here, Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia said a six-lane road over Barapullah Nullah is proposed. A separate 14 km road has been proposed over Najafgarh Drain from Meera Bagh to Wazirabad. The East-West corridor from Raj Ghat to Punjabi Bagh would pass through Delhi's most congested colonies. Another 15 km North-South corridor from Majnu Ka Tila to Dhaula Kuan would intersect the East-West corridor near Karol Bagh. Dr. Walia said an elevated road on Outer Ring Road from National Highway-1 to Wazirabad was also in the offing. Two missing links on Outer Ring Road would be constructed to facilitate uninterrupted traffic flow. A 13 km road would link Wazirabad to Okhla on Outer Ring Road whereas another 13 km road from NH-8 to Janakpuri District Centre would be constructed to complete the entire circle of Outer Ring Road. Dr. Walia said seven major proposals had been mooted to decongest Ring Road and Outer Ring Road aimed at changing the traffic management scenario in the Capital. The Minister directed the Principal Secretary, PWD, Engineer-in-Chief, PWD, Engineer-in-Chief, MCD and Director (Planning), DDA to prepare a feasible plan of action to initiate implementation of these projects on a war footing so that the new infrastructures could be commissioned before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Dr. Walia said the process for getting studies conducted on these proposed corridors would be set in motion soon. The engineers concerned have been instructed to have detailed consultations and prepare a holistic action plan keeping in mind the traffic load for the next 20 years. He further directed that designs of the proposed roads with fewer openings should be prepared to ensure fast movement of traffic.
