NEW DELHI: The special police team constituted to probe alleged destruction of evidence and fabrication of facts that led to acquittal of all nine accused in the Jessica Lal murder last month would soon step up efforts to trace one of the absconding accused who can help strengthen the prosecution's standing in the case. According to the police, Dhanraj worked as a part-time driver of former Rajya Sabha member D.P. Yadav, father of Vikas Yadav, a co-accused in the case. He is wanted for his involvement in disposing of the Tata Safari allegedly used by Vikas to flee away after the incident in the early hours of April 30, 1999. The police believe he could be of help in reconstructing the chain of events following Jessica's murder. During the probe, Head Constable Mukesh Sharma had been assigned the task of locating Dhanraj. But during trail in the court, he surprisingly submitted that he could not make adequate enquires about Dhanraj's antecedents. Mukesh did not record the statement of anyone in Dhinari village in the Badayun area of Uttar Pradesh where he had gone in search of Dhanraj, nor did he make any enquiry with the local police station about his whereabouts. While the police will now try to trace Dhanraj, they might also summon Mukesh in this regard to find out why he failed to gather details about the accused. It is learnt that so far as many as 20 people, including police officers, connected to the case have been questioned by the special team.
