PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Wednesday issued notice under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution), Act, 1981 to five sponge iron units in the State that have been accused of dumping fly ash in a wildlife sanctuary at Anmod Ghat near the State border. The board has directed them to clear the site within three days from Wednesday or face action, including the closing down of the units. The board also requested the State Government to seek information from the records maintained by the police and road transport officials at the Mollem check-post regarding the movement of trucks from sponge iron units to Karnataka, The board Chairman L.U. Joshi and Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza told presspersons here on Wednesday that the board officials went to the site to conduct an inspection on Tuesday after reports regarding the dumping of waste appeared in newspapers. The inspection report notes that 70 to 90 bags of coal dust has been dumped at each of the 10 locations in a 200-metre radius of the Anmod Ghat. The inspection was carried out only within the boundary of Goa, Mr. de Souza clarified. Mr. Joshi said he summoned the representative of the sponge iron units on Tuesday. Representatives of two units attended the meeting and denied that they had dumped the fly ash.
