BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) on Wednesday requested advocates of North Karnataka and B.D. Hiremath, president of the Dharwad Bar Association, to call off their protest and not hold rallies against the delay in setting up Circuit Benches of the High Court in the region. KSBC chairman Y.R. Sadasiva Reddy told presspersons that if any member of the Bar or the public lose their lives during the hunger strike, the Government will be responsible for it. He requested the State Government to take up the issue on priority, consult the High Court and take expeditious steps to set up Circuit Benches in Dharwad and Gulbarga. He regretted that the State Government has not taken the lead in holding meetings with representatives of the Bar in North Karnataka to urge them to withdraw their protest. He alleged that the State Government has been "duping" the people of North Karnataka by making false and misleading statements on the establishment of the Benches. If the Government has no interest in setting up the Benches, it could have said so in the beginning. Instead, it is making false and misleading statements and giving false hopes to the people, he charged. Mr. Reddy said the people of North Karnataka have been demanding the Bench since 1962. Though the former Chief Justice of Karnataka N.K. Sodhi had laid the stone for constructing the building, the Government has not kept its promise of constructing the building expeditiously.
