We're not to blame

The article "Our muddled generation" (Open Page, March 26) pertains to my generation. The deterioration it talks about is largely because of our parents and teachers. We have been brought up the way our parents and teachers wanted to bring us up. If the priority in youngsters' lives today is luxury, and indifference towards others, it is because their parents care for none and wish to live in luxury. If students today are languishing in coaching centres and slogging away for marks, it is because their parents and teachers want them to become scoring machines. If every other student you meet believes that he should be a doctor or an engineer and earn lots of money, it is because his parents, teachers, and relatives have conditioned him to think like that.

I cease the blame game here. It is now for us to turn the tide and change the world around us. But to do this, we have to step off the beaten track our well-wishing elders have prescribed for us.

Sharada Annamaraju,
Hyderabad
