Court calls for scrutiny of posting Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the Director of Technical Education Department to scrutinise teachers' appointments at the Pappanamcode Sri Chithira Tirunal Engineering College. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice V.K. Bali and Justice J.B. Koshy said the Director should examine whether the appointments were in accordance with the norms prescribed by the All India Technical Education Council and submit a report to the court within two months. The petition filed by Aathyavan Kottarakkara said the appointment of teachers by the Board of Directors of the college, headed by Transport Minister N. Sakthan, had irregularities and corruption. Though the counsel for the college contended that neither the State Government nor the KSRTC had control over its affairs, the court was prima facie not inclined to accept this. — UNI

Vaccination against cattle disease

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The third phase of the vaccination against foot disease among cattle will be given from April 1 to 7. The coordinator of the Goraksha Project in a press note here on Thursday wanted the cattle, which could not be covered during the second stage to be subjected to vaccination this time. The fee is Rs.5 per injection. He asked the milk societies, private entrepreneurs in the dairy sector and others engaged in cattle rearing to make use of the opportunity. — Special Correspondent

Government directive

on model code

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: T he Government has asked the heads of departments and the authorities concerned to strictly follow the model code of conduct while utilising the funds under the vote-on-account till the election process is over. The Government wanted them to take prior permission of the Chief Electoral Officers wherever necessary. — Special Correspondent

ISO certification

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Friends Janasevana Kendra of Kerala has received the ISO 9001:2000 certification of the DNV based at Rotterdam in the Netherlands. IT Secretary P.H. Kurien said here on Thursday that this was a big recognition for the policy, formalities and service etiquette of the agency. The services of the Motor Vehicles and Civil Supplies Departments, universities, KSEB, Kerala Water Authority, BSNL, City Corporation and Electrical Inspectorate are at present available in the Friends. The services of the Friends are available in the district centres now. — Special Correspondent

Time extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Government has extended the time allowed to the local bodies to utilise the plan allocation to May 31. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that the maintenance grant could be utilised till June 30. They should have utilised both the funds by March 31. As the election rules have come into force, delays are taking place in the clearance of projects and the utilisation of funds by local bodies. The Government's decision is to overcome this problem. — Special Correspondent

Award for Suvitha

Thrissur: K.V. Suvitha has been selected for the V.P. Suresh Memorial Painting Award. The award was instituted on the occasion of the first death anniversary of V.P. Suresh, former layout artist with Desabhimani. T.M. Santhosh and K.V. Jyothilal won the second and third prizes. The prizes will be presented at a function here on March 31. An exhibition of paintings entered in the competition is being held at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here. — Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: World Tuberculosis Day was observed here under the aegis of the district TB Control Society and Alappuzha District Medical Office with various programme on Wednesday. Alappuzha Medical College Principal Kumari Sheela inaugurated a public meeting organised at Brothers' Tourist Home here in connection with the day. District Medical Officer N.K. Velayudhan presided over the function. District TB Officer K. Venugopal and Indian Medical Association Alappuzha unit president E.K. Antony spoke. — Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: President of the Kerala Jyothisha Parishad and chief of the Kizhakkumuri Avanengatt Kalari A.S. Venugopala Panikker died at his residence at Peringottukara, near Anthikkad, in the district on Thursday. He was 54.
