Bangalore: Little Tanya was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. Autism is a complex developmental disorder characterised by lack of socialisation and communication. She needs speech therapy and special education. Hundreds of children like Tanya, who desperately need help, are unaware of where they should seek help.
Shortage of professionals
The acute shortage of trained professionals to cater to the special needs of these children is also a major hindrance. Other special needs that need attention are mental retardation, learning disabilities, speech delay, hyperactivity and emotional problem. "I CARE", Indian Child's Association for Rights and Education, ensures qualitative care at home, in school and in society. A one-day seminar on "Careers in Rehabilitation Sciences" will be organised on Saturday at Christ College. At the seminar, students will get the opportunity to interact with child-care professionals. Those interested in career options such as special education, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy and counselling can call 98808 15617 or 98802 48191 to register.
