University teachers to retire at 62 in Bihar
Mr. Patel said while implementing UGC pay scale for the universities with effect from January 1,1996, the erstwhile RJD government had, however, retained the retirement age at 60. The UGC again on July 27,1998 wrote to the State Government through the union HRD ministry to raise the retirement age to 62 but the government did not pay any heed to the UGC's recommendation. He said by raising the retirement age the State exchequer would have to bear an additional burden of just Rs 50 lakh during the current fiscal.
Ten years' RI for rape
The second fast track court of the additional district judge R.D. Paliwal also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. According to sources, the convict raped the wife of Dharam Singh of the village Hakimpur Turra on July 16, 2003. The accused had also threatened the family of the victim with dire consequences, if they reported the case. Besides 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000, the fast track judge also awarded one-year imprisonment to the accused under section 506 of the IPC for intimidating the family of the victim.
Woman gets lifer for husband's murder
Additional Sessions Judge Sukhdev Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 each on the two convicts, residents of Koti Sekhan village near here. The duo -- Veero and Balwant Singh -- would undergo an imprisonment of one year more in default of payment of fine. Darshan Lal, a railway employee, was found murdered on April 9, 2004 in Firozepur district.
Woman beaten to death
According to a complaint lodged by Gurmej Singh, a resident of Purana Pind near here, his daughter Varinder Kaur was married to army personnel Surjeet Singh one and a half years ago and was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws for failing to fulfil their demand for dowry. The police have registered a case against Surjeet, his elder brother Kuldip Singh, father Mohinder Singh and mother Sukhwinder Kaur and arrested him, Mohinder Singh and Kaur while Kuldip Singh was absconding.
