Girders fall on goods train; 2 injured
Special Correspondent
ONGOLE:
In a freak accident, two girders, weighing 40 tonnes each, fell off the railway overbridge under construction near the railway station here on Thursday. Two persons sustained serious injuries. Movement of trains on the Chennai - Vijayawada section was affected for sometime. The girders fell on a goods train waiting for signal on the first platform.
A 140-tonne crane was brought from Vijayawada to remove the broken girders and restore train traffic.
Rama Raju, Deputy Chief Engineer, Railways, said that a week ago three pre-fabricated girders were launched between the two piers to complete the 18-metre span.
The construction workers were moving the third girder when the accident occurred reportedly due to failure of the hydraulic jack.
The girder fell off the bridge and under its impact the second girder too fell off.
