Pejawar swamiji to build houses for Dalits and poor this year

BANGALORE: Sri Visvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math in Udupi on Thursday announced that he will construct houses for Dalits and poor people living in the backward regions of the country this year.

He was speaking at a function organised at Poornaprajna Vidyapeeta here to mark his 75th birthday.

With the old age approaching fast one should do some service to society and humanity. Realising this he decided to build houses for the poor and Dalits, besides spreading the message of Lord Rama for the welfare of the country, the swamiji said.

President of the Bharatiya Janata Party Rajnath Singh lauded the swamiji's contribution to society.

The Pejawar swamiji was responsible for undoing many forced conversions that took place at Meenakshipuram in Tamil Nadu during 1981-82, Mr. Singh said. He appealed to the Centre to ban religious conversions. Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan, Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Govinda Karjol, Opposition leader in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil and President of the State unit of the BJP Sadananda Gowda spoke on the occasion.
