Collector distributes copies of model code

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Political parties should not solicit votes in the name of caste and religion, District Collector N. Ayyappan has said.

Addressing a meeting of the representatives of political parties at the Collectorate on Thursday to discuss the conduct of the Assembly elections, Mr. Ayyappan said the parties and candidates were bound to strictly abide by the model code of conduct.

The parties should ensure that candidates were not seeking votes near places of worship. Stringent action would be taken against those violating the code of conduct.

He reminded the leaders that in the course of the campaign, the candidates should not involve in character assassination of their rivals.

Permission of the district administration should be sought in advance to organise public meetings. Demonstrations and meetings should be conducted without disrupting traffic. Before using a building or open space for campaigning, candidates and party leaders should seek the permission of its owners.

Only four persons other than the candidate and the one who proposes him will be allowed to accompany him while filing nomination papers. Similarly, two vehicles will be permitted to escort the candidate's vehicle within 100 metres of the returning officer's office to file the nomination papers, Mr. Ayyappan said.Party leaders should take care to avoid clashes between their camp followers while organising public meetings.

He called upon the leaders to ensure that their workers exercise restraint in distributing pamphlets and publicity material during the campaign. The Collector also distributed copies of the model code to the leaders.

Pirappancode Murali (CPI-M), P. Ramachandran Nair, Chempazhanathy Anil, K.R. Anil Kumar (Congress), S. Rama Subramainaiam, Peringamala Ani (Siva Sena), Ambalathara Sreedharan Nair (RSP), Charupara Ravi (Janata Dal - S), V.K. Mohan (Congress - S), L. Subramanian (JSS) and election deputy collector K. Sukumara Pillai attended the meeting.
