Kerala delights on K.G. Marg

Madhur Tankha

FROM GOD'S OWN COUNTRY: Apart from a wide variety of food stalls, dances and handicrafts will be on display during the three-day festival starting on April 7.

NEW DELHI: Kala Dhvani, a non-government organisation, in collaboration with Kerala House is organising a three-day food festival, "Spicy Heritage of Kerala", at Travancore Palace here on Kasturba Gandhi Marg from April 7. The festival will showcase for Delhiites the rich cultural heritage of Kerala as also provide cuisine to satisfy their palates.

Distinctive in flavour and exotic in its use of various ingredients, cuisine from God's Own Country has long been acclaimed for its sophistication. Based on the Ayurveda tenets -- the holistic medicinal system renowned for its simplicity and effectiveness -- cuisine from down South is diverse and incorporates various influences that the coastal State has absorbed over centuries.

From a wide array of vegetables and fruits to many different usages of coconut and sumptuous seafood to the wide assortment of spices that Kerala is famous for, the fare is a delight for those who celebrate food and its finest traditions.

Promising to bring Kerala's fine gastronomical traditions to the Capital, Spicy Heritage of Kerala will offer free food sampling and also put up a wide variety of food stalls of traditional cuisine from the State. For those who want to get a few tips in cooking authentic dishes from Kerala, there will be live demonstrations of traditional cooking methods.

To spice up the mood, traditional artistes will put up displays of great arts like the graceful Mohiniyattam and the passionate ritual dance Theyyam. For those interested in shopping something exotic, there will be stalls selling traditional Kerala handicrafts and textiles, besides a range of food goodies like mouth-watering pickles and chips. And for those interested in traditional wares, there will be an exhibition of traditional kitchen utensils.
