KOZHIKODE: The budget of Calicut University for 2006-07 envisages starting of new courses, including Hospital Management, Hospitality Management and Tourism under the School of Distance Education. It has set aside Rs.1.8 crores for modernisation of University departments. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Syed Iqbal Hasnain approved the budget on Friday. The budget shows receipt of Rs.111.23 crores and expenditure of Rs.111.65 crores. The budget proposes to start the financial year with surplus of Rs 48.76 lakhs and end with surplus of Rs.7.09 lakhs. This is based on the assumption that the Government grant-in-aid sought by the University would be received in full. The new courses under the School of Distance Education would have the support and aid of the Distance Education Council of the UGC. Attempts are being made to expand the realm of self-financing courses to different areas, including Lakshadweep, so as to offer scope and prospects of education to more pupils as well as increase revenue. This year, the University expects receipt of Rs.14.19 crores from about 50 self-financing courses conducted by it. The budget also outlines the University's plans to attract more students, including NRI and foreign students, to its self-financing courses. A sum of Rs.57 lakhs has been allotted for the development of library, Rs.51 lakhs for laboratory, Rs.60 lakhs for the renovation of Pareeksha Bhavan, Rs.85 lakhs for repair of buildings and Rs.10 lakhs for the renovation of the indoor stadium. The University Engineering College gets an allocation of Rs.40 lakh, while the women's hostel in Vadakara will receive Rs.20 lakhs. A sum of Rs.25 lakhs has been earmarked for the Students Union Office, Rs.10 lakhs for the Thrissur MBA Centre and Rs.10 lakhs to build a Women Studies Department. Also, provision has been made in the budget for construction of EDUSAT building, history museum, basketball and volleyball courts.
