Minister's call to combat terrorism

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said terrorism had assumed global dimension and the situation demanded that every citizen of the world community should contemplate on combating the menace.

Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on "Combating International Terrorism: Russian and Indian Perspective" at Ferozeshah Road here on Wednesday, Mr. Jaiswal said India and Russia were being constantly victimised by terrorist elements since a long time.

Organised jointly by Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Indian Association of Friendship with Foreign Countries, the function was also attended by Ambassador of the Russian Federation in India Vyacheslav I. Trubnikov.

"Need for vertical growth in cities"

NEW DELHI: Harvard Graduate School professor Frederic Schwartz stressed the need for vertical growth in Indian cities to solve transportation and other basic infrastructure problems.

Addressing a lecture series in the Capital on Thursday, Prof. Schwartz said the more a city spreads out the more it has to worry about transporting and moving people.

The professor added that city planners should work towards providing a public transport system that takes vehicles off the road. He also advised against the use of exterior glasses in commercial buildings, as it was not suitable because of warm weather conditions of the country.

He also stressed use of eco-friendly construction materials and conservation of energy in the buildings.

New eye surgery procedure

NEW DELHI: Delhi Medical Association president K.K. Aggarwal on Friday said it was now possible for patients with pathological myopia and very high minus power of glasses to get their vision corrected and lead a non-depressive and non-handicapped life.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Aggarwal said up till now thick glasses were used for such patients that reduce the quality of vision.

Eminent eye surgeon from California Stephan Bylsma said it was now possible to implant an ultra thin but high-power lens within the eye over the natural lens.

Students stage

Hindi play

NEW DELHI: Students of Hindi Dramatic Society of Lakshmibai College, Ashok Vihar, staged a Hindi play titled "Saudagar" at the India Habitat Centre here this week.

Under the guidance of the director Suman Kumar from the National School of Drama, the students impressed the audience with their power-packed performance. For the convenor Saroj Gulati, it was challenge to train the girl students to play male characters.
