Metro service to Dwarka sub-city formally inaugurated

NEW DELHI: The long wait of Dwarka Sub City for a fast and modern transportation link to the heart of the Capital finally got over on Friday as the metro services from Sector 14 to Sector 9 were formally inaugurated after a puja ceremony. The inaugural train was flagged off by Member of Parliament from Outer Delhi Sajjan Kumar from the Sector 9 Dwarka station.

Among those who attended the inaugural function and travelled by the inaugural train from Dwarka Sector 9 to Dwarka station were the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director, E. Sreedharan, Vice-Chairman of Delhi Development Authority, Dinesh Rai, Member DDA and MLA from Nasirpur Mahabal Mishra and senior officers of DDA and DMRC.

On this 6.5 km route within Dwarka, the commercial operations will start from Saturday. With the extension the total length of the Barakhamba-Dwarka Sector 9 Line 3 has increased to 28.40 km while the total length of Delhi Metro network has gone up to over 62 kms. Frequency of trains in Dwarka Sub-City will be 10 minutes as every second train operating from Barakhamba Road to Dwarka will go into the sub-city.

For this section, completed in a record 22 months, DDA had contributed Rs.320 crores as it wanted to add value to its Dwarka Sub City project. The entire 6.5 kms section is elevated having piers at an average interval of 15 metres while the road clearance is 5 metres and all the stations are at ground level.

On this section toilets have been constructed outside the paid area but inside the premises of all the stations and about 250 square metres of parking space has also been provided at all the stations. Water harvesting structures have also been built at all six stations in Dwarka Sub-City and this is the first time that bird spikes have also been provided at all electric poles to prevent birds from perching there so that they cause no damage to portals and insulators.

Since the for the Delhi Metro a corridor had been earmarked in the Master Plan of Dwarka, no displacement of buildings was required during the construction. As such the number of project-affected people was also minimal and they too were adequately compensated. Also, as in Dwarka, instead of one huge pier to support the viaduct, there are two small circular piers side-by-side, DDA has drawn up plants to develop greenery along the corridor beneath the viaduct.

To promote the use of Metro in and around Dwarka, the State Transport Authority has approved 12 routes for RTV feeder bus services which will pass through Dwarka Sub-City. And now, DDA said, DMRC has also agreed to further extend the Dwarka corridor by 2.5 km from Sector 9 to Sector 22. The cost to be borne by DDA has been worked out as Rs.275 crores by DMRC of which DDA has already paid about Rs.50 crores.
