Monitoring Committee takes tough stand on sealing

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee overlooking the ongoing sealing of illegal shops in residential areas of the Capital has asked the Delhi Jal Board and the two private power distribution companies -- BSES and NDPL -- to disconnect water and power connections to the premises being sealed.

Taking a strong view of reports of traders breaking seals of their illegal shops, the three-member Committee has also asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi police to immediately file FIRs against guilty people and take stern action as per the Supreme Court order of February 16, 2006.

The Committee, comprising Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) chairman Bhure Lal, former advisor to the Election Commission K.J. Rao and Major General (retired) S. P. Jhingan on Thursday convened a meeting of senior officials of the MCD, DJB, BSES and NDPL to take stock of the ongoing sealing drive. It again held a meeting with Municipal Commissioner A.K. Nigam and Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul on Friday.

The Committee, entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the Apex Court order, impressed upon the officials the need for proper coordination among various departments to ensure speedy, effective and peaceful sealing action.

Asking the officials to remain objective and perform their task without any bias, the Committee also asked the civic body to make arrangement for video recording the sealing process so that penal action could be taken against violators.
