VISAKHAPATNAM: Special Judge for CBI Cases T. Bhaskara Rao on Friday sentenced a tax assistant for possession of property worth about Rs.69 lakhs, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income. The accused was sentenced to undergo four years rigorous imprisonment and asked to pay a fine of Rs.3 lakhs and in default to suffer RI for 18 months for the offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused Jyothi Prabhakar Prasad Tiwari, a tax assistant in the office of the Commissioner of Income Tax 2 in Visakhapatnam, was found guilty of having assets to the tune of Rs. 69,15,057 in his name and in the names of his family as on July 6, 2001. The case was investigated by CBI officials under the supervision of Superintendent of Police A. Sai Manohar. The prosecution was conducted by Senior Public Prosecutor B. Ravindranath.
Engineers' case
In a separate case, the Special Judge for CBI Cases sentenced Subhash Chandra Choudhary, a garrison engineer and M. Radhakrishna Ranga Rao, junior engineer in the MES to undergo six months simple imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs.500 each and in default to suffer SI for one month for the offence under section 120 B of the IPC for accepting Rs.40,000 from the complainant K. Siva Rama Raju, proprietor of M/s Godavari Traders, Visakhapatnam for issuing a letter of acceptance. Further, they were sentenced to undergo SI for one year and to pay a fine of Rs.1,000 u/s 7 of P.C. Act, 1988. They are also sentenced to undergo one year SI and to pay a fine of Rs.500 u/s 31(1)(d) read with 13(2) of PC Act. The sentences would run concurrently.
Man robbed of cash
A man was robbed of Rs.70,000 after being misled by two youth on Friday. Venugopal, a contractor had withdrawn the money from a bank at Dondaparty and was counting the cash when two youth approached him and said that some currency notes had fallen to the ground. As Venugopal bent to pick up the notes, the accused snatched the cash bag and fled the scene. On a complaint filed by the victim, the Fourth Town police registered a case and are investigating it.
