Pondicherry: The Department of Elections has constituted a three-member screening committee under the chairmanship of Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Pondicherry to preview, scrutinise and certify political advertisements in television channels and cable networks. A department release said here on Saturday that other members of the committee are an Assistant Returning Officer from Pondicherry region and a Deputy Director (Programme) of Doordarshan Kendra Pondicherry.

The Joint Chief Electoral Officer, P.T. Rudra Goud, said in a release that the directives of the Election Commission were pursuant to an interim order of the Supreme Court issued on April 13, 2004, to constitute the committee. There are also designated officers for each of the four regions of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam to consider advertisements of political nature from individual contestants. District Election Officer in Pondicherry is the designated officer for Pondicherry region, while District Election officer of Karaikal is an officer for that region.
