CHENNAI: The wealth of information on Indian heritage gathered from archaeological surveys is on sale. A sales counter of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) publications was declared open by T.S. Sridhar, Special Commissioner for Archaeology, on Halls Road, Egmore Complex, on Thursday. Publications on Indus seals, rock paintings, conservation of monuments, Pallava architecture, Tamil inscriptions, Buddhist antiquities and many more subjects of historical significance can be accessed. Reports of the first Director-General of the ASI, Cunningham, dated from 1862; copies of Epigraphia Indica, an annual report on Indian Epigraphy from 1882; and `Indian Archaeology - A Review,' an annual publication of archaeological review from 1953, are also on sale. Guidebooks and picture postcards of Khajuraho, Sanchi, Ajanta and Goa, are the other attractions. Speakers at the inauguration said the sale counter was among the first collaborations between the State and Central archaeological departments.
More counters soon
"More counters will be opened in centres such as Madurai and Tiruchi depending on the response," said Mr. Sridhar. M. Rajendran, Director, Tamil Development Centre, talked about how the Brahmi script was being used to create modern fonts for handwriting recognition software for Tamil. The publications are available at a 10 per cent discount.
