The Department of Communication & Journalism organised a seminar on "Right to Information Act" in collaboration with Press Academy of AP. Charanjit Arha, Chief Information Commissioner, described the Act as a sunrise legislation providing greater transparency and good governance. Admitting that there's a need for bringing about attitudinal change in bureaucracy for effective implementation of the legislation, he urged for concerted efforts on the part of the society to seek information. He also appealed to different segments of the society not to misuse it to seek personal vendetta. Mr. D. Amar, Chairman, PAAP said that the Academy was in the forefront of creating awareness among journalists and various sections of the society about the Act. Prof. Sridharacharyulu, Nalsar University and Prof. Ramabrahmam of Hyderabad Central University spoke. Ahsan Reza, Additional Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau, B. Ankaiah, Lok Satta threw light on the Act and the revolutionary changes it can bring in.
National seminar
"For democracy to survive and grow in India, women empowerment is necessary. India has shown remarkable resilience in sustaining democracy," said V. Rama Devi, former Governor of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka, while inaugurating a two-day national seminar on "Theoretical and Empirical Images of Democracy with Special Reference to India" organised by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla at ICSSR-SRC in Osmania University. Suleman Siddiqi, Vice-Chancellor, Osmania University urged people to make democracy workable in a plural society like India. R.V.R. Chandrasekhar Rao, former V-C of B.R.Ambedkar Open University spoke .
Annual day
University College of Science celebrated its annual day at Tagore Auditorium that was a mix of fun and entertainment. Mohd. Suleman Siddiqi, Vice-Chancellor lauded the progress of the college and called upon the staff and students to strive for the excellence. The Principal, K. Veera Reddy highlighted the achievements of the college. He said that the Placement Cell of University College of Science had arranged campus interviews by various pharmaceutical and IT organizations. The cell also organised counselling sessions, workshops and pre-placement seminars for students. The students presented a cultural programme.
Telugu University
Theatre lovers were treated to plays on mythology and social issues by the students of Theatre Arts Department of the University for two weeks. Some plays like "Kallu", "Kaadu Suma Kala", "Guppedu Vennala" brought back memories of plays that dominated Telugu lives before movies came in. Some plays to hit stage next week include "Kurchi", "Seven Plus Seven", "Sri Krishna Rayabaram", "Athani Kosam Ithanu", "Veedhi Natakam",, "Brahma Ratha" and "Panchama Dharmam".
Literary discussion
The University organised a discussion on the writings of noted poet and writer Boi Bheemanna where the former Vice Chancellor N. Gopi was the chief guest. He said Bheemanna's writings touched every aspect of Telugu literature. He created a separate culture and philosophy in Telugu literature and it reflected in the book "Gudiselu Kaalipotunnayi." Vice Chancellor Avula Manjulatha also spoke.
ANU
The Campus College of ANU in Guntur celebrated its 30th anniversary on Friday. There was a festive atmosphere all around as students, dressed in their best, were present in large numbers. The Chief Guest of the day, well known actor and Andhra Pradesh Cultural Council Chairman Dharmavarapu Subramanyam said that participating in extra-curricular activities would help students become well-informed persons. Students who work hard and develop skills are working in different places across the world, bringing a good name to the university, he said. Well-known folk artiste A. Gopinath emphasized on the importance of humour in the day-to-day stressful lives of people. Vice Chancellor V. Balamohandas called upon the students and the staff to make ANU one of the best universities in the country. Later, prizes were given away to students who topped university examinations. Retired faculty members were felicitated. A musical troupe played latest film flicks and folk songs while the students had a gala time.
Kakatiya University
The Kakatiya University has bagged a prestigious project from the University Grants Commission under the 10th plan and it would soon set up an exclusive `Ambedkar Study Centre' with a grant of Rs 8.2 lakh from the UGC. G. Bhadru Naik who was appointed the director of the new centre said that with to perpetuate the ideas of men like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Ambedkar, the Government had sanctioned study centres dedicated to each of them. Among 10 centres sanctioned under the 10th plan, Kakatiya University got the Ambedkar Study Centre. The centre would strive to acquaint the students, teachers and general public with the Ambedkar's vision, life and philosophy. The new centre would be inaugurated on April 14, on Ambedkar's jayanthi on the university campus. The centre has earmarked Rs 4.7 lakh for purchase of books, Rs 2 lakh for the purchase of infrastructure and Rs 1 lakh for the proposed two-day national seminar on `Ambedkar's vision of dalit uplift and its contemporary relevance' to be held in May second week. Mr. Naik said the students would undertake field visits in rural areas to spread the message of Dr B R Ambedkar and inspire the rural folk. "There will be more field visits besides the extension lectures, workshops and seminars where people from different corners of the country will be involved," he added.
