dated April 3, 1956: Pope's Easter message

In his Easter message on April 1, The Pope has called on statesmen to limit nuclear weapons and put an end to "the course towards the abyss". He warned that the world was "almost losing hope of being able to arrest the homicidal and suicidal folly" of a nuclear arms race. To increase the fright there have now come radio-controlled missiles capable of reaching enormous distances and carrying by means of atomic arms the total destruction of men and things. He pointed out that the peaceful uses of atomic energy opened new and marvellous horizons to mankind.
