Trouble brews in Pondy Congress

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: With patience virtually running out following the delay in getting a clear picture of the candidates and the number of constituencies the ruling Congress would get, a section of the key functionaries of the Pondicherry Congress committee held closed door meetings in a semi-urban constituency here on Sunday.

The constituency is now held by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. A good segment of the Congress party asserts that its promising candidates should be fielded.

The supporters of this group in the Congress held the meeting in the residence of a Congress functionary. This is an advance measure to meet any eventuality. The final stand of the functionaries would be clear only when the constituencies and candidates are announced.

PCC leader, Shanmugham is expected to return to Pondicherry from New Delhi on Monday with firm indications about the seats. The Pondicherry chief minister and Mr. Shanmugham is supposed to have appraised Ms. Sonia Gandhi of the relatively better position of the Congress in Pondicherry. Mr. Shanmugham is the chairman of the committee set up by the AICC to select candidates for the polls.
