Three Lambada girls meet watery grave

MAHABUBNAGAR: Three Lambada girls from Pathkodangal thanda under Kodangal mandal were drowned in an agricultural well when they slipped into it while bathing on Sunday. The three cousins were identified as Annu Bai, Kamli Bai and Anji Bai, all some 18 years. - Correspondent

Couple attacked, relieved of gold

WARANGAL: An elderly couple was attacked and relieved of gold in broad daylight. According to Circle Inspector K. Bhupathi, three miscreants went to the residence of Chanda Markandeyulu, 76, at Nandaiahgari Doddi Street around 3 p.m.

When his wife Kalavathi, 70, opened the door, they attacked her with stones following which she fell unconscious. They also attacked her husband. Later, they decamped with bangles, necklaces and ear- rings. - Staff Reporter

Teachers threaten to boycott spot valuation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation (APUTF) on Sunday threatened to boycott SSC spot valuation from April 8 if the Government failed to take action on 10 demands by Thursday. The Joint Action Committee of 17 teacher organisations already called for the boycott, according to Ch. Subash Chandra Bose, president. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Affiliated Private Engineering Colleges Non-teaching Staff Federation at a meeting at Srikalahasti on Sunday, demanded implementation of service rules as specified in the Pay Revision Commission , according to a press release issued by C. Change in court holiday

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has declared April 7 holiday instead of the previous day to the High Court and subordinate courts in the State on account of Sri Ramanavami, according to Y.V. Rama Krishna, Registrar-General of the High Court. - Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: A property dispute between two groups allegedly led to destruction of a place of worship on the outskirts of the city on the Nandikotkur road on Saturday night. According to reports, a makeshift place of worship was set on fire. - Staff Reporter

FACOR revives two furnaces

VIZIANAGARAM: The Ferro Alloys Corporation (FACOR), Garividi, revived two of the three furnaces it switched off six months ago on Sunday. The management took the decision after the Government reduced the power tariff per unit from Rs. 2.87 to Rs. 2.55, according to Assistant General Manager Lakkaraju N. Murty. The decision would also put to rest the six-month-long agitation of employees and their families against 60 per cent lay off declared in two spells from October 1 last year. - Correspondent

Two CPI activists die

in road accident

NALGONDA: Two CPI activists - Narasimha, 25, and Mutyalu, 42 - died and six others sustained injuries when the lorry in which they were travelling hit a power pole at Ghanapuram stage in Pedda Adisarlapally mandal on Sunday. They were on their way to attend a public meeting to be addressed by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at Angadipet. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: State Committee of CITU has extended support to the State Bank of India employees' indefinite strike from Monday.

S. Veeraiah, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Sunday criticised the Government for its "adamant" attitude in not agreeing to the recommendation of SBI management to change the percentage of pension. - Special Correspondent

Defunct water

schemes

KHAMMAM: Members at the Zilla Parishad general body meeting held here on Sunday wanted the administration to identify defunct water schemes and repair them immediately. Some of them said that rural water supply department was yet to take stock of the schemes in the villages. Many schemes, reported by the department to be in good condition, were not working properly.

Payam Sitamma, the ZPTC members from Kunavaram said that three schemes in her area figured in that list. But they were in fact not working for quite some time.

The Bhadrachalm MLA, Sunnam Rajaiah and the Yellandu MLA, Gumadi Narsaiah said that many villages in their mandals were facing acute water scarcity. The pipelines damaged in some villages needed replacement. The villages of Sudimall and Vepalingapali were also facing water problem. - Staff Reporter

CPI(M) leader's

plea to Minister

KURNOOL : CPI(M) district secretary T. Shadrak has urged the incharge Minister of the district Konatala Ramakrishna to visit the district to feel the problems for himself. He said as the decisions were taken at Hyderabad, there was no relevance. Migration of labourers was a serious problem in the district but no concrete steps had been taken so far to mitigate the problem, he said.

Army recruitment

KADAPA: Soldier tradesmen and soldier-general candidates of Kadapa, Chittoor, Anantapur, Prakasam, Krishna and Nellore district are required to attend a screening test on April 4 and physical fitness test on April 5 here, according to Kadapa SP Y. Nagi Reddy.

Candidates of Kadapa, Chittoor and Krishna districts were eligible for soldier technical, nursing assistant, clerk and storekeeper (technical) posts, he said in a statement on Sunday. The Branch Recruitment office would conduct written test after physical fitness test, he said and asked candidates to attend along with original certificates. - Staff Reporter
