LIC hands over

surplus cheque

NEW DELHI: Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) chairman handed over a cheque for Rs. 696.60 crores to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram as share of the Government in the surplus arising out of the acturial valuation as on March 31, 2005.

During the fiscal 2004-05, the LIC generated a total surplus of Rs. 13,932.03 crores. After having distributed 95 per of the surplus to the policy holders by way of bonuses, the balance was arrived at as 5 per cent of share of the Government, which was handed over to the Finance Minister on Friday. The total surplus include the surplus of Rs. 2,210.53 crores of special reversionary golden jubilee year bonus to the policy holders and the Government share of Rs. 110.53 on it.

`Increase quote for

poor students'

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh on Friday appealed to public school managements to increase free-ship of poor students from 20 per cent to 30 per cent.

"The public school managements should come forward to educate the children of the deprived section of society," he said at a prize distribution function at Sangwan Model Senior Secondary School. .

Following his advice, the Sangwan Model Senior Secondary School management announced extension of free-ship quota for the poor from 20 per cent to 30 per cent from the next academic session.

`IGNOU programmes get good response'

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University vice-chancellor H.P. Dikshit stated on Sunday that the academic programmes of the university had received a very enthusiastic response from different categories of learners.

He said this year the annual enrolment had crossed a figure of four lakhs and the cumulative student strength was about to touch 15 lakhs. Flexible and wider choices in course offerings have succeeded in attracting professionals as well as fresh school pass-outs and inbuilt flexibility in entry qualifications has provided access to higher education to persons from remote regions and deprived sections, he added.

Eviction drive flayed

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State Committee of Communist Party Of India (Marxists-Leninist) has strongly denounced the eviction drive being carried out in the city and demanded proper resettlement of the evicted slum dwellers and street vendors.

In a statement, CPI (ML) State secretary Rajendra Pratholi criticised the overall housing policy of the government for the urban poor and its increasing anti-people role. All private builders, construction mafia and government agencies have now become active as real estate prices are expected to rise steeply in view of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
